How To Check if Your Home is Electrically Safe
1. Check that your power points and light switches are not cracked or broken
Do you look at the light switch every time you turn it on or just put your finger where you know it belongs? The spring in the electrical switches can push a broken switch's mechanism out leaving the electrical components exposed. If you were to put your finger into this, you would be electrocuted ⚡️
2. Visually check to see if you have At least 2 RCDs & test them regularly
A residual current device (RCD) is a lifesaving device that stops the flow of electricity within milliseconds if you were to make contact with it. They can seize up if not tested often from corrosion (more likely in coastal homes due to salt in the air). A push button test frees the contacts and will continue to protect you. An RCD is identified with a switch & a push button on the same device. If there is no push button, it's not an RCD (see photo)
3. Check to see if you have 240V smoke alarms less than 10 years old outside of bedrooms
Smoke alarms need to be hard-wired and you can easily tell if they are by a little green LED light on the 240V smoke alarms. Your smoke detector head contains an expiry date sticker which is usually displayed next to the replaceable 9V battery (see picture). They should also be tested with artificial smoke which is part of a Response Electrical Health Check .
4. Check your halogen down lights have heat canister protection
In 2012, it became compulsory for halogen down lights to be installed with heat canister protection. There were numerous house fires caused by these down lights that operate at around 300 degrees and pose a huge fire risk. We recommend the replacement of these lights with LED down lights in all cases and not the retrofit LED globes.
5. Get an electrical health check on your home
There are so many things that you will not be able to check yourself such as the condition of your electrical cables, your switchboard condition, your RCD functionality under fault conditions and earthing condition that will protect you and your home which can only be tested by a licensed electrician. We recommend you get one of these at least every 3 years so if you haven't had one in the last 3 years, book one below and ensure the safety of your family from the hidden dangers of electricity that you can't check yourself!
